Areas round Matala

One way to enjoy a bit more peace is to stay at PITSIDHIA, about 5km inland. This has long been a well-used option, so it's not quite as cheap as you might expect, but there are plenty of rooms, lively places to eat and even music bars. If you decide to stay here, the beach at KALAMAKI is an alternative to Matala. Both beaches are approximately the same distance to walk, though there is a much better chance of a bus or a lift to Matala. Kalamaki has devel­oped somewhat, with a number of rooms - Psilaritis  is a good bet - and a couple of tavernas, but it's still a rather unfin­ished, soulless little place. The beach stretches for miles, surprisingly wild and windswept, lashed by sometimes dangerously rough surf.
