Sixteen
kms west of Hania, is the coastal village of Maleme, famous for the heroic
battle fought there against the German paratroopers in May 1941. 
Maleme is a large village with many choices of tavernas and quality shops. It
has kept its original Cretan flavour unspoilt from the massive tourist trade,
offering an excellent base to organise numerous countryside daily excursions
to the most photogenic places of the Chania county. Rent a car, take the
motorway and discover the most photogenic places of Crete in all directions.
Take an all-day boat trip round the Gramvoussa peninsula with the dramatic
volcanic scenery, and try the sands and water of Balos Bay where Charles and
Diana bathed on their honeymoon.Maleme also offers a good bus link to
Chania, should you occasionally wish to leave the car at home. Chania
itself is the main town of the county, clearly divided between a modern
bustling centre and an intimate atmosphere contained in the old quarter beside
the port.

The area of Maleme is not very built up at all and still pretty quiet. 16 km from Hania, frequent bus connections. Atmosphere Not much atmosphere but the beach front is quiet. Accommodation A few large hotels and several pleasant apartments close to the beach. Restaurants Some restaurants. Shopping Basic needs are covered by a few shops. Nightlife Some bars and a discotheque at the western end of Maleme. Beach The beach is made of fine pebbles and is far less crowded than the beaches of Gerani, Agia Marina and Platanias. Additional comments Maleme is best known as the place where German paratroopers attacked Crete in 1941. Most of those young men lost their life in the attack and are laid to rest in the German war cemetery. It is a moving place located on the hills above Maleme and a place well worth a visit to ponder human stupidity. The main beach at Maleme, Beach Kamisiana slopes gently into a shallow sea, making it ideal for children. It is north facing however and in strong winds the sea can get very choppy. The sand is soft and taverna tables line the beach between shady tamarind trees. Sunbeds have been provided free for patrons of the tavernas, but his is a practice that unfortunately appears to be dying out. Beyond the dinky harbour, recently rebuilt, is a huge and monstrous cement building surrounded in wire that both mars the headland and prevents walks around it - only in Greece.
